Kyu mean a senior student of 16 years or over who has attained a grade denoted by a coloured belt.

Within the WJA/BJA there are nine Kyu grades which are indicted by the following coloured belts:

9th Kyu - Yellow Belt

8th Kyu - Orange Belt

7th Kyu - Orange Belt

6th Kyu - Green Belt

5th Kyu - Green Belt

4th Kyu - Blue Belt

3rd Kyu - Blue Belt

2nd Kyu - Brown Belt

1st Kyu - Brown Belt

The grade of the 9th Kyu can be awarded on completion of a course of elementary instruction.  This award can be made by qualified BJA examiner or coach on completion of a course at a WJA/BJA Member Club.

A holder of a Mon grade may, within 12 months of becoming a senior, be assessed for a suitable Kyu grade.

Conditions

  1. Candidates must have a current WJA/BJA licence (senior individual membership) which must be presented to the examiner when taking the examination.

  2. A senior is graded in two parts

  1. Theory Section

For promotion within Kyu grades, theory can be taken before or after the contest requirements; it can be at the same event as the contests or can be a completely separate event.

In the theory section the candidate must be able to demonstrate certan judo techniques and answer successfully questions put by a qualified examiner on the meaning of the referees' calls and signals.  Such an examiner must be a BJA senior examiner, a BJA Examiner, a BJA Advanced Coach, a BJA Senior Coach or a BJA Club Coach authorised by an Area to examine the Kyu Grade Theory Syllabus.  Such Club Coaches are permitted to examine up to one grade below the grade they hold themselves.  They must record the maximum level to which they can promote a candidate in the Examiner's Remarks' column of the examination sheet when officiating at the grading.

When the candidate has successfully completed the theory section, the date and venue of the examination, the examiner's signature and number will be recorded in the appropriate sections of the record book.

This is the only record of the candidate's theory successes and therefore, if lost, the candidate will have to take the theory examination again.

  1. Contest Section

In The contest section the candidate is expected to complete in a number of contest (a minimum of two) under the direction of an authorised BJA Senior Examiner, or an authorised BJA Examiner.

Note that the examiner may also test and theory previously completed.

When the candidate has successfully completed the contest section the examiner will record the grade recommened in the candidate's Record Book.

  1. Only when successes have been recorded in both the theory and contest sections can the candidate wear the judogi belt of that grade.
